Throat Surgery

Throat surgery, also known as pharyngeal or laryngeal surgery, encompasses a range of surgical procedures performed on the throat and its associated structures. These surgeries are conducted to treat various medical conditions and address issues related to the throat, voice, and swallowing. Here is a brief overview of throat surgery:

  • Tonsillectomy: A tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils, which are two small masses of tissue located at the back of the throat. It is often performed to treat recurrent tonsillitis, chronic sore throat, or breathing problems caused by enlarged tonsils.
  • Adenoidectomy: An adenoidectomy involves the removal of the adenoids, which are located at the back of the nasal cavity and contribute to immune function. This surgery is commonly performed in children to treat breathing problems, ear infections, or sleep apnea related to enlarged adenoids.
  • Laryngoscopy: A laryngoscopy is a diagnostic or surgical procedure that involves inserting a small, flexible scope with a camera into the throat to examine the larynx (voice box) and surrounding structures. It can be used to diagnose voice disorders, evaluate vocal cord function, or remove foreign objects or growths.
  • Pharyngoplasty: Pharyngoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair or reshape the pharynx (the throat's muscular tube) to address issues such as snoring, sleep apnea, or velopharyngeal insufficiency (a condition affecting speech and swallowing).
  • Thyroid Surgery: Thyroid surgery can involve the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland, which is located in the front of the neck. It is performed to treat conditions such as thyroid cancer, goiters, or hyperthyroidism.
  • Tracheostomy: A tracheostomy is a surgical procedure in which an opening (stoma) is created in the neck to provide an alternative airway. It is often done in emergency situations to secure the airway or as a long-term solution for individuals with breathing difficulties.
  • Tongue Base Reduction: Tongue base reduction surgery is performed to address obstructive sleep apnea by reducing the size of the base of the tongue, which can obstruct the airway during sleep.
