Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the aesthetics of the nose while also addressing functional concerns if needed. It is performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient's preference.
The surgeon makes incisions, often inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or occasionally with an external incision across the columella, the strip of tissue separating the nostrils (open rhinoplasty). Through these incisions, the surgeon reshapes the underlying bone and cartilage to achieve the desired nasal form. This can involve altering the bridge, reducing or enhancing the size of the nostrils, or refining the tip of the nose.
Rhinoplasty is highly individualized, as the surgery must be tailored to the patient's specific desires and facial proportions. It may address concerns such as a hump on the bridge, a bulbous tip, a crooked nose, or congenital deformities.
Beyond its cosmetic benefits, rhinoplasty can also correct structural issues that obstruct airflow and cause breathing difficulties. The procedure can improve nasal function by correcting a deviated septum or other anatomical abnormalities.
Recovery typically involves some swelling and bruising, but most patients can return to their usual activities within a week. Final results become more apparent as the swelling subsides, often taking several months.
